Section 6.1 Operators and examples for Google Search shortcuts

Hello, I find it very helpful sometimes to use these shortcuts when doing searches in Google. The complete list can be found at: www.google.com/help/cheatsheet.html

These shortcuts can help you perform a more precise search, of find out some great information about links to a website or related sites.

Normally, you insert a word or several words in the Google search box. When you do this, you will get results containing those words in any place on the website. But, what if you want something very specific like how to find websites which contain (and only contain) "red converse hightops" then how to search? Just add the quotes as shown above and only sites with that exact phrase in that exact order will be returned.

Other examples:

  • “blue converse hightops” OR “red converse hightops” will bring back results with blue OR red converse hightops.

  • To exclude words from the search, use the – symbol. For example, type: jets -models will bring back jets but not sites with the word models in it.

  • You can also get definitions in the Google search box, type: define:gizmo and this will bring back various definitions of the word gizmo.

  • You can also use Math operators, type: 33 + 66 or 55% of 77 and you will get the answer.

  • You can type: link:www.gbizbuilders.com and see all the links to that website. Or, just put any website after the operator link:

Take a look at the Google link at the beginning of this article and print it out for reference. Very useful and fun!
